“There is some of the same fitness in a man’s building his own house that there is in a bird’s building its own nest. Who knows but if men constructed their dwellings with their own hands, and provided food for themselves and families simply and honestly enough, the poetic faculty would be universally developed, as birds universally sing when they are so engaged? But alas! we do like cowbirds and cuckoos, which lay their eggs in nests which other birds have built, and cheer no traveller with their chattering and unmusical notes. Shall we forever resign the pleasure of construction to the carpenter?”

Earlier this year I designed a brand new logo & responsive website for Built By Blake Carpentry – a Port Macquarie based carpentry service. This was my first foray into the world of construction related graphic/web design work & I had an absolute blast. For as long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated by the built environment, it’s underpinnings, machinations & history, & in awe of all things architecture & construction design – almost an entire bookshelf stacked with issues of Architectural Digest et al. testifies to a lifelong appetite I honestly hadn’t given much thought to until I undertook this project.
I have never created this many draft logos for a project before, nor have I ever spent so much time trawling for research/reference images as I believe that truly effective, simplistic logo design is born from the deliberate limiting of unnecessary stimulus & vicarious ideas, & have long considered ‘logo design’ & ‘artistic restraint’ to be synonymous. However, there are moments in one’s career where an opportunity to explore one’s own unrealised passions comes a’ knockin’, & as you can see from the small selection of work below, I answered that knock with open arms & thoroughly look forward to doing similar work in the near future.
